Adeline's current mood:
Presidential Election Tuesday, August 23, 2011 As I go around gathering information from my family and friends on who to vote for the presidential election, their response was a resounding "Tony". Afterall, he was the oh-so-familiar face we all saw on TV most. I am not a fan of him at all. So I am writing this entry to urge every friend of mine out there to take a look at other candidates too. Here's a summary of all the candidates I have gathered by reading up all the news available: Tan Kin Lian, 63 PAP member for 30 years but left in 2008 due to inactivity and disagreement with party's value - Propose a higher housing grant for people who served NS - Pledge to donate half his salary to charity if elected - Gave his speech in English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil - Helped the people in the Lehman Brothers' Minibond saga, where many elderly and less educated were misled into buying the minibond. Tan Jee Say, 57 Member of the Opposition Party SDP - The only non-PAP man contesting - Said $500,000 salary is enough for him. The rest would be donated to his pet cause which include caring for the elderly. -Had the most disagreement with the PAP - Questioned Tony Tan on his whether his anti-casino view has stopped the government from building the casino. (Tony was the deputy prime minister then.) Read more here.
Tan Cheng Bok,71
- Sang "Count on me, Singapore" and posted on youtube. - Propose to shift the Government (Prime Minister) out of Istana so that to avoid undue influence -Propose an annual statement for Singaporean to update news on the reserve.
- Resigned from "Jurong General Hospital" in protest on naming the hospital "Ng Teng Fong hospital" as the government spent 1billion dollars on the hospital compare to Ng family's of 125 million. Last but not least, we have
Tony Tan - Supposedly the most experienced candidate handling the ministry. - Persuade his cabinet colleagues to abolish the "graduate mother" scheme in the 1980s. (Graduate mother scheme: children of graduate mothers are given priority for admission into school) I tried to be objective when I read about the candidates. But I guess I am biased against Tony Tan already with his pro-foreign talent approach. The road and public transport congestions and rising house prices appear for a reason. But the only issue concerning me is, "Why give money to foreigner to study in Singapore when its own people are struggling to get into local university?" The foreigner might be smarter but it does not translate to staying to contribute to our society. It is an utter disappointment to know that Tony champion the move when he was the minister of education then. Can we have a president who loves us more than he loves foreigner? As for his son's NS deferment, it is really unfair to all our NS man because his son got the best of both deferrment and non-combat unit, just because his father was the minister of defence then. Defer for 12 years! Who could have defer for so long? Even Lee Hsien Loong could completed his national service at the SAF before graduating from Cambridge. Why can't his son? Of course, there are much more criticism about him but those seems more like fabrication than facts, so I would not mention them here. So, who will you vote? It is gonna be a head-cracking Saturday this week. But hey! We have got an extra public holiday! :) Source: http://pe.channelnewsasia.com/candidates.html http://sg.news.yahoo.com/generalelections/
